Day By Day

  • Day 1: Taipei - Taichung (30km / 304m - Optional)

Guests will be picked up by our guide and support van in Taipei and driven south into the heartland of Taiwan’s Hakka community. You’ll have time to explore one of Taiwan’s most iconic temples and old streets before enjoying traditional Hakka cuisine group lunch.

After a short transfer, you’ll have the choice to join an optional 30km shakeout ride into Taichung. This will be a good chance to get familiar with the roads in Taiwan, shake off any cobwebs and make sure your bike is good working order.

You’ll check-in at your hotel and have some time to check out the town before our group dinner and trip brief with your guide.

🗝️  Pro Tip: Whether you join the shakeout or prefer to transfer into the city, it’s worth having a short spin on the bike to check gear, shoes and adjust anything last minute.

    Included: Lunch, Dinner

  • Day 2: Taichung - Sun Moon Lake (95km / 2012m)

We begin in Taichung, the bustling hub of Taiwan's bicycle manufacturing industry, and finish at the picturesque Sun Moon Lake, nestled near Puli in the central mountain range. Covering 100km with a total ascent of 2,209 meters, this route is a challenging yet rewarding introduction to the Peaky Climbers Tour.

The journey kicks off with the 136 route, a 7km climb at a 6% average gradient. Known as a testing ground for local riders, this ascent is both scenic and invigorating—a perfect way to warm up your legs and drop a toe into Taiwan's cycling paradise.

After conquering the initial climb, enjoy an exhilarating descent into Guoxing, where the surrounding landscapes shift to verdant countryside. Nice flat roads offer a well-earned reprieve before the next challenge.

The adventure continues with a 19km climb through seldom-used forest roads, averaging a comfortable 4% gradient. Reminiscent of the Japanese ‘rindo’ roads, these roads have been all but forgotten by motorists, offering the hardy cyclist a real sense of escape.

In Shuili Township, take a moment to recharge at a picturesque tea house with a delicious local meal, before the final stretch of the day. With renewed energy, tackle the last leg toward Sun Moon Lake, where the tranquil waters and beautiful views reward your efforts. This famous destination is the perfect end to a challenging day of climbing and exploration.

🗝️  Pro Tip: Be sure to eat well and hydrate properly, especially if you’re not accustomed to riding in warm temperatures.

    Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Day 3: Sun Moon Lake Loop (116km / 2892m)

Prepare for an unforgettable third day on the Peaky Climbers Tour, as we delve into the secluded wilderness of Nantou County, surrounded by lush jungles, tranquil roads, and awe-inspiring landscapes. Today’s route is as much about the experience as the challenge, taking you deep into nature on roads rarely touched by traffic.

Leaving the cozy embrace of the hotel, we quickly find ourselves on roads less traveled, where for long stretches, spotting a car becomes a rarity. The local monkeys are often more common.

Circling the stunning Sun Moon Lake, we tackle a mellow climb that feels more like a ride through a postcard than a workout. The shimmering water, lush greenery, and serene atmosphere set the tone for a day that feels like a journey through a dream.

Turning onto the winding roads of a mystical forest, the final 15km transport us to a setting reminiscent of the Pacific Northwest's coastal rainforests. Towering trees, dappled light, and crisp mountain air create a truly enchanting ride to close out the day.

After the day’s exploration, we return to the comfort of the hotel, ready to relax, reflect, and gear up for the next adventure.

🗝️ Pro Tip: Steady pacing is critical here to conserve energy for the climbs ahead.

    Included: Breakfast, Dinner

  • Day 4: Sun Moon Lake - Lishan (73km / 2983km)

The fourth day of the Peaky Climbers Tour is the pinnacle of the adventure, as we tackle the climb to Wuling, the highest passable summit in Taiwan, sitting at 3,275 meters. A magnet for cyclists from Taiwan and abroad, this iconic peak is the finish line for the renowned Taiwan KOM Challenge and a test of determination, endurance, and spirit.

This route to Wuling is no less demanding than its eastern counterpart, gradually building in intensity as you ascend. It’s a test of grit, but the reward lies in every meter gained, as the landscape transforms around you.

As you climb higher, sweeping views of the valley below open up to your right. Along the way, the orderly rows of tea farms dot the otherwise wild and untamed hillsides. This harmonious blend of human craftsmanship and natural beauty provides a meditative backdrop to this demanding ride.

The summit at Wuling is not just a geographical landmark; it’s a symbol of perseverance and achievement. The final meters are tough but deeply satisfying as you crest the climb to breathtaking views and the proud sense of conquering one of Taiwan’s greatest cycling challenges.

We’ll take a quick transfer to the unofficial “Cabbage Capital of Taiwan” (you read that right), where we’ll have a celebratory dinner and share stories about the day’s journey.

🗝️ Pro Tip: Carb-load well the night before to fuel your body for the sustained effort. Also, pace yourself strategically, especially during the steeper sections, to ensure you have energy for the final push.

    Included: Breakfast, Dinner

  • Day 5: Lishan - Su'ao (80km / 488m)

After the challenges of Wuling, day five is a welcome reward: a 60km descent with an elevation drop of 2,280 meters from Lishan to Yilan, followed by an easy 20km ride along flat terrain to the luxurious Lakeshore Su’ao Hotel, the finest in the region. This stage is all about enjoying the ride, taking in the incredible diversity of Taiwan's landscapes, and indulging in the delights of Su’ao.

The day starts with a long, thrilling descent through a mix of lush jungle, hillside townships, and open farmland. Wide riverbeds accompany the ride as you near the coast, painting a vivid picture of the country’s natural beauty.

The final stretch brings you to the small port village of Su’ao, where the beachfront and harbor create a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. It’s a soothing contrast to the mountainous landscapes of the earlier days, offering a perfect spot to relax.

The ride ends at the luxurious hot spring hotel, the Lakeshore Su’ao. Here, you’ll enjoy premium accommodations and a chance to relax in style. The hotel’s proximity to the beach and the town ensures plenty of opportunities to unwind and explore.

The group will recharge at a modern beachfront café serving delicious pizza and refreshing drinks, with the option to indulge in a celebratory beer or two.

This day offers the perfect balance of adventure and recovery, setting the stage for a much-needed rest day tomorrow.

🗝️ Pro Tip: Take your time on the descent. While the route isn’t overly technical, it features a substantial amount of descending, requiring focus and steady concentration. Keep your speed manageable, take breaks if needed, and soak in the incredible views as you wind your way down. Enjoy the journey and savour the unique experience of gliding through Taiwan’s breathtaking landscapes. You’ll appreciate it even more when you arrive refreshed and ready to relax at Su’ao!

    Included: Breakfast, Dinner

  • Day 6: Su'ao Rest / East Coast Explore (37km / 757m - Optional)

Day six of the Peaky Climbers Tour offers a welcome respite with two options: take the entire day off the bike to relax and recharge or enjoy a short and scenic ride that captures the essence of Su’ao’s coastal charm. Whether you ride or rest, this day is all about rest and recovery and soaking up the local atmosphere.

Option 1: A Restful Day Off the Bike

Stay at the Lakeshore Su’ao Hotel and take full advantage of its luxurious amenities:

→ Swim in the pool or lounge by the water.
→ Soak in the soothing waters of the local hot spring water.
→ Work out in the gym.
→ Stroll around Su’ao Harbor or local hike, taking in the sights and sounds of this quaint fishing village.

    Option 2: A Relaxed Scenic Ride – 37km with 757m Elevation

For those who prefer a light ride, the route offers a gentle climb along the old Su’ao Highway, now practically car-free thanks to the construction of a newer road.

The ride begins with an easy ascent over the hill, offering stunning views of the fishing village below and the open ocean stretching to the horizon. The peaceful environment and minimal traffic make this climb both enjoyable and serene.

After the climb, we descend to Fenniaolin, a picturesque fishing harbor with a small café where you can catch your breath and soak in the charming setting.

Whether you take the day to rest or explore, Day 6 will end with a final group dinner with sushi and sashimi made from the freshest local catches.

    🗝️ Pro Tip: Relax!

    Included: Breakfast, Dinner

  • Day 7: Su'ao - Taipei (76km / 1747m)

The final riding day of the Peaky Climbers Tour is a beauty. Covering 76km with 1,747m of elevation, the Northern Cross Highway offers a stunning route from East to West, a road rarely visited by cycling tourists - though it should be. It’s the perfect crescendo to cap off this epic adventure.

We’ll begin the day with a van transfer to the foot of the climb, ensuring you start fresh and ready for the journey ahead. The ascent starts with a steep, but thankfully short, section that takes you to the summit. Though challenging, the climb rewards you with breathtaking vistas at every turn, making the effort well worth it.

From the summit, it’s all downhill - well, almost! Wind your way through charming villages, past towering peaks, and alongside a deep emerald river, which flows 400 meters below the road.

You’ll roll into a picturesque restaurant overlooking the surrounding mountains and enjoy a hearty, organic meal. The ride concludes shortly thereafter at the Daxi Tea Factory, an iconic establishment built in 1926. Here, you’ll enjoy a unique tea tasting, to sample the region’s finest brews at this historic site.

To avoid the busy city roads, we’ll hop back into the van for a comfortable transfer to Taipei, where you’ll check into your hotel and have the evening to refresh, relax, and reflect on your incredible journey.

Whether it's the emerald river, the serene villages, or the exhilarating descent, Day 6 delivers a truly memorable close to the Peaky Climbers Tour. Celebrate your achievements, savour the tea, and enjoy the moment—you’ve earned it!

🗝️ Pro Tip: This descent includes some short ascents and  the best way to handle these is to spin easily in a low gear to avoid taxing your legs. After a week of climbing, your legs will appreciate it!

    Included: Breakfast, Lunch
